Spirit Airlines has shut down operations after failing to secure a $500 million rescue deal, triggering a rise in ticket prices and disruption for travellers. The fallout is already visible, with fares climbing and airlines stepping in to absorb demand.

The sudden exit of a major ultra-low-cost carrier is tightening seat supply, pushing up prices on several routes. Data cited by CBS News shows fares have risen 23%, or about $60 for a return journey, while passenger volumes dropped around 20%.

The shutdown marks a shift in the budget travel segment and raises questions on pricing, refunds and what flyers should do next.

Spirit Aviation Holdings said it began a phased wind-down after a restructuring plan failed. Rising fuel costs forced the airline to shut operations despite earlier efforts to stay afloat.

"In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business," CEO Dave Davis said.

"However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company."

Why Fares Are Rising

Spirit's exit reduces low-cost capacity in the market, leading to higher ticket prices. The impact is sharper on routes where the airline had a strong presence.

The rise in fuel costs has already increased operating expenses for airlines, and the loss of a price-sensitive carrier is adding further pressure on fares.

Airlines have begun responding to the disruption. United Airlines said it is preparing to support affected customers and employees.

American Airlines said it has introduced fare caps on routes where it competes directly. "The American Airlines team is prepared to do all it can to support Spirit Airlines customers and team members," it said.

What Flyers Should Do

Spirit Airlines has cancelled all flights and said refunds will be issued. Payments made using credit or debit cards will be processed automatically to the original mode of payment.

Passengers who booked through travel agents have been asked to contact them directly. Refunds for bookings made using vouchers, credits or reward points will be decided through bankruptcy proceedings.

Travellers will need to rebook flights with other carriers as airlines adjust to the gap left by Spirit's exit.
