Auto Sales September 2021 Live: Chip Crisis Hurts Maruti, M&M And Royal Enfield The Most

India's second largest carmaker, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., saw its sales fall by 22.47% as the global shortage of semiconductors adversely hit the vehicle production in September, the carmaker said in a statement.

It's sales fell to 45,791 units in September, the company said.

Exports however rose marginally to 12,704 units in September from 12,202 units in August.

Royal Enfield, the maker of India's cult cruiser motorcycles, saw its sales fall 27% to 33,529 units in September due to ongoing global shortage of semiconductor chips and the recent lockdown in certain source markets, the company said in the filings on Friday.

The company however added that the supply shortage situation has improved towards the end of September.

"Availability of parts is expected to start scaling up from Q3 of FY22," the statement added.

Sales snapshot (M-o-M)

• Sales of models with engine capacity up to 350 cc fell to 25,520 units from 38,572 units in August.

• Sales of models with capacity over 350cc however rose to 8,009 units from 7,288 units in August.

• Exports fell to 6,296 units from 6,790 units in August.

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s auto segment posted an overall sales of 28,112 units in September, a fall of 8.08% over August.

M&M’s passenger car sales too fell 17.7% over August to 13,134 units in September.

"The challenges around the supply of semiconductors continues to pose difficulties for the auto industry globally," Veejay Nakra, CEO of Automotive Division at M&M, said in the statement. He said M&M has taken several steps to mitigate the effect and are working towards managing the situation as best as possible.

However, the Farm Equipment segment sales soared as the tractor sales rose 89% over August to 40,331 units in September.

Hemant Sikka, President of the Farm Equipment sector at M&M said that the strong revival in rainfall during September brought cheers to the farming community.

"With initial crop production estimates indicating highest ever Kharif Crop, coupled with the upcoming festive season, we are optimistic of a strong demand in the coming months," he added.

Tata Motors Ltd.’s passenger vehicle division sold 25,730 units in September, an 8.16% fall over the preceding month as chip shortage continues to impact supply.

The company in the statement added that the demand for cars and SUVs is expected to remain strong in the forthcoming festive season, but the supply situation for electronic components may continue to witness challenging times.

• Overall Tata Motors’ domestic sales rose 9.16% to 59,156 units.

• Total domestic commercial vehicle sales increased 11.6 % to 33,258 units.

Ashok Leyland Ltd. reported an overall sales of 9,533 units in September, an increase of 1.8% over August, according to the company’s exchange filings.

• Domestic sales rose to 8,787 units from 8,400 units in August

• Domestic medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales rose to 4,529 units from 3,986 units in August.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.'s total sales fell in September due to electronic components' shortage.

Sales fell 34% month-on-month to 86,380 units in September, the company said in a statement.

• Exports fell 14.8 % to 17,565 units.

• Mini and compact vehicle segment sales fell 60.17% to 89,953 units.

• Utility vehicle sales too fell 43% to 18,459 units.

Escorts Ltd.’s tractor sales rose in September amid record monsoon activity during the month.

Tractor sales rose 54.8% month-on-month to 8,816 units, the company informed the exchanges. Escorts said the above normal rainfall in September has however delayed harvesting in some parts of the country resulting in a two-to-four week delay in the onset of the festive season demand.

The company sold 7,975 units and 841 units in the domestic and overseas markets, respectively.

Escorts added that all the other macroeconomic factors remain favorable.

The company said that commodity inflation continues to be a concern.

Bajaj Auto Ltd. sold 4,02,021 units in September, an increase of 7.7% over August, according to its exchange filing.
