This holiday is celebrated by the populace with tremendous splendour and zeal. During this period of Deepavali, Lakshmi Puja, Dhanteras Puja, and Govatsa Dwadashi are also celebrated.
People typically dress up, stay at home to celebrate with family and friends, decorate their homes with lights, and indulge in sweets and pastries made especially for Diwali with their loved ones.
Significance Of Dhanteras
Dhantrayodashi is often referred to as Dhanteras. The Dhan in Dhanteras represents wealth, and the 13th day is known as teras. It denotes success and fortune in the worshippers' homes. Dhanteras is one of the most fortunate days in Hindu tradition and is observed jointly with Trayodashi Tithi (the thirteenth tithi) in the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month.
On Dhanteras, a lot of people light diyas outside their homes. These diyas are presented to Yama, the Lord of Death, in a common Hindu belief as a sign of respect for the deity. Lighting diyas is claimed to drive away all evil spirits and prevent untimely family deaths.
Not only that but people also decorate their homes with colourful rangolis, and lamps and wear new clothes to worship Lord Dhanvantri (God of Ayurveda) in the evening. Additionally, people, especially women, purchase items like silver, gold, cutlery, brooms, and many others to usher good luck, prosperity, and wealth into their homes. The reason is that it is believed in the Hindu texts that on this holy day, Goddess Laxmi and Lord Kuber arrived with many other treasures during the Samudra Manthan.
