Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has sold over 2 lakh BS-VI cars in the past six months, India's largest carmaker said on Friday, even as it continued to battle a prolonged auto slowdown in India.

The India arm of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp. sold 1.22 lakh cars in September 2019, indicating a 24.4 percent decline year-on-year and 15 percent growth sequentially.

It had in April 2019 relaunched the Alto 800 small car and Baleno hatchback with petrol engines compliant with Bharat Stage-VI emission norms.

Maruti Suzuki now has eight BS-VI cars, including the Alto 800, WagonR, Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Ertiga and the recently launched XL6 and S-Presso.

"We believe that mass adoption is one of the most important factors for success of any new technology. Offering eight BS-VI compliant petrol vehicles in the mass segment, much ahead of timeline, has helped us to take this technology to a larger customer base," Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director and chief executive officer of Maruti Suzuki, said in a statement.

The early introduction of BS-VI cars is indicative of Maruti Suzuki's commitment to the government's vision for clean and green environment, he added.

Emissions from BS VI-compliant petrol engine contain about 25 percent less Nitrogen Oxide and can run on BS-IV fuel as well. The stricter norms come into effect April 1, 2020.
