  • HDFC Bank nominated Anup Bagchi and Kaizad Bharucha for CEO, pending RBI approval
  • Bharucha is an internal candidate with nearly 30 years at HDFC, now Deputy MD
  • Bagchi is an external candidate with 30 years in banking, currently ICICI Prudential CEO

HDFC Bank has sent the names of Anup Bagchi, MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, and Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy MD of HDFC Bank, to the Reserve Bank of India for approval for the lender's top job, people familiar with the matter said.

The RBI is expected to take a call on the appointment in the next 7–10 days, with Bharucha representing the internal candidate and Bagchi the external choice.

Bharucha has been with the HDFC group since 1995 and has spent close to three decades across businesses including corporate banking, retail assets, mortgages, emerging corporates and business banking. He became HDFC Bank's Deputy Managing Director in 2023 and has been closely involved in the integration of HDFC Ltd with the bank. His long association with the institution gives him deep familiarity with its businesses, people and operating culture.

Bagchi, on the other hand, brings a three-decade career across banking and financial services. An ICICI Group veteran, he has worked across retail and corporate banking, MSME, rural banking, treasury and markets, and has also led ICICI Securities. He took charge as MD & CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance in 2023, giving him experience of running a large financial-services franchise outside traditional banking.

The search for a new chief executive was accelerated following an unexpected announcement on August 29, when incumbent MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan informed the stock exchanges that he would not seek reappointment for a third term. Despite the board's efforts to persuade him to stay, Jagdishan confirmed he will retire at the close of business hours on October 26, 2026, when his current term concludes.

Jagdishan, who succeeded founding CEO Aditya Puri in October 2020, has recently navigated a challenging environment. Earlier, he had presided over the immense task of integrating the bank's massive 2023 merger with its parent company.

The choice between Bharucha and Bagchi represents a decision between internal continuity and a fresh external perspective at a critical juncture for India's largest private-sector lender.

Bharucha's potential elevation is expected to come with a regulatory caveat. RBI guidelines cap the continuous tenure of a whole-time director or CEO at a private bank at 15 years. Having joined the bank's board as an executive director in June 2014, Bharucha will reach this ceiling in June 2029.

Meanwhile, the external search—which reportedly saw over 150 applications before narrowing down to contenders like Bagchi—aimed to find a leader with experience managing financial businesses of significant scale and complexity.

To stabilise the management bench and ensure continuity during this major leadership transition, HDFC Bank's board also recently approved the appointment of Jimmy Tata as an executive director for a three-year term, effective upon RBI clearance.
