(Bloomberg) -- Not all Americans are dependent on personal vehicles -- especially not New Yorkers.
It's the urban area with the highest number of people per vehicle, leading the pack with an average of more than 2 people per car, according to data firm Trulia. No other large metropolitan area with over 1 million residents surpasses the ratio.
The more densely populated a city is, the less its inhabitants tend to rely on cars to get around. Income also plays a role. The lower it is, the less likely residents are able to afford a vehicle.
In New York, East Harlem, Washington Heights and the Lower East Side have the highest number of people per vehicle, with 12.58, 12.11 and 11.27 people per vehicle, respectively.
On the other side of the coin, Knoxville, Tennessee, has 1.31 people per vehicle. Dayton, Ohio and Denver follow at 1.36 and 1.37.
The data are based on zip codes.
