The Quarterly Employment Survey conducted by the government's Labour Department estimated that total employment in nine sectors rose by two lakh over the preceding three-month period in the quarter ended September.
Total employment in the nine selected sectors in July-September, 2021 was estimated at 3.1 crore approximately—two lakh higher than 3.08 crore in the April-June round, according to the Quarterly Employment Survey published on Monday.
Manufacturing accounted for nearly 39% of total employment estimated in the nine sectors, down from 41% in the previous round. The share of IT rose to 11% from 7% previously, while employment in health also saw a rise in share.
Data were collected through field visits from 11,503 establishments, the Labour Ministry said in a statement. This is the second quarterly survey by the government published to generate high frequency data to assess employment situation in nine non-farm sectors of the economy.
Other Key Findings
Percentage of female workers stood at 32.1%, higher than 29.3% reported during the April-June 2021 quarter.
Regular workers constituted 87% of the estimated workforce in the nine sectors, with 2% being casual workers.
In the construction sector, 20% of the workers were contractual and 6.4% were casual workers.
An estimated 5.6% of the establishments had vacancies and the estimated number of total vacancies was 4.3 lakh.
About 65.8% of such vacancies weren't due to retirement or resignation of employees.
