The situation on call drops has improved but more needs to be done, said telecom minister Manoj Sinha, who met the heads of top telecom companies on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.
The minister also cited the latest Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report which says that while the call drops situation has improved, it will be a done deal only when the consumer says so.
Talking about infrastructure to address call drops, the minister said telecom operators have set up an more than 60,000 base stations. Topping the list is Idea Cellular who's set up 25,832 base transceiver stations (BTS), followed by the country's largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel with an additional 22,000 base stations. Vodafone India has added another 13,780 stations. With other smaller operators also adding new stations, the total figure has crossed 60,000.
A base station is a fixed point of communication for customer cellular phones on a carrier network.
The government will harmonise and hand over the spectrum won by telecom operators in the recently concluded auctions before November 19, 2016, which Sinha hoped will be put to good use by operators.
The ministry is also looking to set up a portal, which will be ready in about a month's time for consumers to file complaints on call drops.
