Arvind Panagariya, the first vice chairman of government think tank NITI Aayog, will step down and return to a teaching role in the U.S., according to a Bloomberg report.

Panagariya, 64, who is also a senior economic adviser to the Narendra Modi government, will hold office till August 31, the report said. He has held the position since NITI Aayog came into existence on January 1, 2015, replacing the planning commission.

A professor of economics at the Columbia University, Panagariya has previously worked as chief economist at the Asian Development Bank. He was among the names considered for the position of Reserve Bank of India governor before Urjit Patel was appointed in September last year. He has also taught at the University of Maryland.
