Who Is Sanae Takaichi? Japan’s First Female PM Secures Landslide Victory in Snap Poll

The Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, have secured a two-thirds majority in Japan's House of Representatives, according to public broadcaster NHK.

The ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secured a landslide victory in Japan's snap elections on Sunday.

Takaichi-led LDP has secured 316 of the 465 seats in the lower house of the country's Parliament. The ruling coalition has won 352 seats, as per seat numbers projected by NHK.

After the landslide victory, Takaichi, in an interview with NHK, said that she is ready to pursue policies focused on making Japan strong and prosperous, reported Associated Press. She also confirmed that the current Cabinet will continue to operate under the new government without any change.

“I think the current Cabinet is a good team. It's still only just over three months since it was launched, but the members have been working really hard and are producing results. So, I don't think I will change it,” Takaichi said.

“Most parties are in favour of reducing the consumption tax, such as reducing the tax on food items to zero, or to 5%, or reducing the tax on all items to 5%. The LDP has also campaigned for a consumption tax cut. I strongly want to call for the establishment of a supra-party forum to speed up discussion on this, as it is a big issue,” she added, as per the NHK report.

Takaichi declared snap polls just three months after becoming Prime Minister in October 2025, as the LDP was struggling for support over corruption and election concerns.

Who is Sanae Takaichi?

Sanae Takaichi is Japan's first woman Prime Minister. The 64-year-old leader is also the first female to head the LDP. In October 2025, she was designated as the Prime Minister after a vote in the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors.

Born in Nara Prefecture in 1961, Takaichi served as a television host before entering politics, according to a BBC report.  Her father was an office worker and her mother a police officer.

She also worked as a drummer in a heavy metal band for a short duration, where she was famous for carrying many drum sticks because she would break them during intense performances, the BBC report added. She is also known for her love for cars and scuba diving.

In the 1980s, she worked in the office of Democrat Patricia Schroeder, a US Congresswoman known for her criticism of Japan. She contested her first parliamentary election in 1992 as an independent candidate but lost. However, a year later, she won a seat and joined the LDP in 1996, as per the BBC report. Since then, she has successfully contested parliamentary elections 10 times, losing only once.

She has also served as a minister before becoming the Prime Minister. She held the positions of minister for economic security, state minister for trade and industry and minister for internal affairs and communications.
