United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued a fresh directive, ordering an enhanced travel restriction or a complete ban on citizens of 19 countries over security concerns.

The list includes Yemen, Somalia, Haiti and Libya, among others, from where both immigrant and non-immigrant entry will be banned into the US, the White House said.

In a video message shared on the White House’s social media platform, Trump said, "We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen... That is why today I am signing a new executive order placing travel restrictions on countries including Yemen, Somalia, Haiti, Libya, and numerous others."

Out of the 19 countries listed, the US will fully restrict and limit the entry of nationals from 12 countries, while the citizens from the remaining 7 countries will face partial entry restrictions.

Countries That Will Face Full Travel Restrictions:

Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Countries That Will Face Partial Travel Restrictions:

Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

According to the White House, Afghanistan nationals will face complete suspension of travel permissions into the US because the country is under Taliban control, lacks a functional central authority and has inadequate document verification and vetting processes.

Burma has been blacklisted because its nationals have a significant “overstay” rate in the US. Similar reasons were cited for Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea and others based on the data cited from the US’ ‘Overstay Report’.

The US banned Iranian nationals, calling it a state sponsor of terrorism. “Iran is the source of significant terrorism around the world, and has historically failed to accept back its removable nationals.” Cuba has also been labelled as a “state sponsor of terrorism.”

The White House also said that certain exceptions would be made for individuals whose travel is deemed to serve a critical US national interest. These exceptions to suspension would be based on a “case-by-case basis for individuals.”
