US Stock Market Today: S&P 500, Nasdaq Back In Red; Dow Jones Plunges As Iran Crisis Deepens

US Stock Market Today: S&P 500, Nasdaq Back In Red; Dow Jones Plunges As Iran Crisis Deepens

The main US stock market indices opened in the red on Thursday as the Washington's conflict with Iran continued for the sixth straight day. 

The S&P 500 opened 0.5% or 34.01 points lower at 6,835.49, tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.5% or 114 points at open to trade at 22,692.67 and Dow Jones Industrial slumped nearly 1% and shed 400 points to trade at 48,338.61. 

On Wednesday, the wall street had rebounded and closed in the green after a two-day slump. 

As of 10:30 a.m. EST Dow Jones slumped 1.3% or 645 points to 48,110.90, S&P 500 traded 0.67% lower at 6,822.50, and Nasdaq was fell 0.5% to trade over 100 points lower at 22,679.05. 

The magnificent seven stocks traded mixed with Nvidia Corp. down 0.58% to $182.09, Microsoft Corp. up 1.21% to $410.12, Google-parent Alphabet Inc. down 0.9% to $300, Amazon trading 0.56% higher at $218.11, Tesla Inc. down 0.12% to $405.44, Meta Platforms Inc. flat at $669.84 and Apple Inc. down 1.44% to $258.74. 

After the market opened, only three out of the 11 sectoral indices traded in the green. Decline was led by Consumer Staples and Healthcare sectors, while Energy and Real Estate sectors led the gain. 

Major defence stocks like Lockheed Martin Corp. gave up gains in early trade itself. 

Among the commodities, spot gold prices also fell over 1% to 5,087.62 an ounce while crude oil prices rose. West Texas Intermediate jumped 5% to trade at $78.32 a barrel and global benchmark brent crude traded 3.4% higher at $84.16 a barrel. 

The US spot dollar strengthened against global currency to rise 0.2%. The euro fell 0.3% to $1.1604, British pound fell 0.2% to $1.3344, and Japanese yen fell 0.3% to 157.46 per dollar. 

Bitcoin, the largest traded cryptocurrency fell, 1.5% to $72,232.56.
