US President Donald Trump's push to acquire Greenland has reportedly been fuelled by him not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize after "stopping eight plus wars". Trump sent a message to Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, pinning blame on his country for not awarding him the prize, a report by US-based CBS News confirmed.
"Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper' for the US," Trump was quoted as saying in media reports.
He added that the world will not be a secure place unless Washington has "complete and total" control of Greenland.
Støre, in his response, explained how the decision to award the peace prize to Venezuela's opposition leader María Corina Machado was in the hands of an independent committee and not the government of Norway.
The messages were exchanged in the context of Trump imposing 10% tariffs on eight of America's EU allies for their opposition against his desires for Greenland.
Støre and Finland's president Alexander Stubb had critiqued the levies via a message and pointed to the need to de-escalate the standoff via a three-way phone call the same day. The US President reportedly replied to their messages on Sunday.
Trump's wish for the Nobel Peace Prize had been as evident as his desire to assume control over the Artic island.
Greenland is sparsely populated, but resource rich, and well positioned for early warning defence systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring vessels in the region.
Use of military force in the pursuit of Greenland is not out of question for US. In the message, Trump said that Denmark will not be able to guard the island against China and Russia who he claims do not have any right of ownership on it.
The president had made it clear in his initial post on 'Truth Social' that he will not let China and Russia get to Greenland before the US does.
