Important days in January 2025: January holds the distinction of being the first month in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions, January will mark the arrival of the New Year 2025, bringing with it a month filled with significant events and celebrations around the world.

Several auspicious days and national and international events fall during this month. These include New Year's Day, Republic Day, National Voters Day, Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti, Lohri and Makar Sankranti.

New Year's Day falls on Jan. 1 and marks the beginning of the new year. In 2025, the New Year’s Day will fall on a Wednesday.

One of the most important events in January for Indians is Republic Day, which falls on Jan. 26 every year and is a national holiday. This year, the national holiday will fall on a Sunday. On this day in 1949, the Indian Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution as the supreme law of the land, replacing the Government of India Act, of 1935. The Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, and the day has been celebrated annually ever since to honour this historic event.

Lohri is one of the most popular folk festivals celebrated in India, especially in Punjab and the northern part of the country. It usually falls on Jan. 13. It is celebrated one day before Makar Sankranti, the last day of the month of Magh as per the Hindu calendar. The date of Lohri changes every 70 years.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated every year in January to mark the beginning of the harvest season as well as the Sun’s entry into Capricorn which signals the end of bitter cold weather and the start of warmer days. It is the most important of the 12 Sankrantis that fall in a year.
