Not many of us are buying tablets these days, and most of the blame can be laid on the popular big-display smartphones. Which is why brands like Samsung are tweaking their tablets, and offering them to a different set of consumers, with an added twist – Iris.
Samsung is offering the Galaxy Tab Iris tablet, with an Iris scanner that's not for unlocking your device, but rather as a key to enter your Aadhaar account. The tablet is directly linked to UIDAI's Aadhaar database, which according to recent reports has details of over 1 billion Indian citizens.
Samsung claims that the Galaxy Tab Iris is the first-ever tablet with eye-scanning biometric technology that has been made in India. Priced at Rs 13,49, the Galaxy Tab Iris is primarily targeted at businesses and government divisions for now.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Tab Iris tablet is currently capable of connecting users to their Aadhaar accounts using their Aadhaar numbers, and eye-scanning via the Iris scanner. But in the foreseeable future, Samsung promises to offer cash transactions via Aadhaar accounts that will do away with the need for paper – digital India indeed.
The Korean brand has also assembled a set of APIs that are available to developers for creating similar secured apps.
The tablet thrives on the security of Samsung's KNOX feature and, according to the company, no data is saved on the device or by Samsung as most of the details are fully encrypted.
The tablet gets a 7-inch 1024x600 pixels display, running on Android Lollipop with the Iris scanner at the back.

But that's the thing with this tablet. You won't get it at shops or even in online stores. Whoever wants to buy the Galaxy Tab Iris needs to talk to the enterprise guys at Samsung. Fingerprint scanners are passé now, it's the age of the iris.
