Copilot Tasks can manage a range of activities.

Microsoft has launched a new artificial intelligence tool called Copilot Tasks, which has been designed to handle everyday digital chores in the background without requiring users to lift a finger.

The feature, announced on Thursday, Feb. 27, operates through its own cloud-based computer and browser, allowing it to take the strain off personal devices. While introducing Copilot Tasks, Microsoft termed it “AI that doesn't just talk to you, but works for you.”

According to the company, Copilot Tasks can manage a range of activities, from scheduling appointments to creating structured study plans, while users focus on other priorities.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman shared details in a post on X, describing the new tool as a shift towards more action-oriented artificial intelligence. “We've been working on a whole new way to get things done: Copilot Tasks,” he wrote, adding, “AI that talks less and does more, no complicated setup or coding skills required. Just ask for what you need and Copilot will take it from there.”

Suleyman mentioned a few examples of how the system could be used in everyday life. Among them, he said Copilot Tasks can “turn a syllabus into a complete study plan, with practice tests created and focus time blocked before each exam.” It can also monitor property listings and automatically arrange viewings, or manage inboxes by surfacing urgent emails with draft replies prepared and unsubscribing from promotional messages that go unopened.

Microsoft said it began the research preview yesterday (Feb. 26), giving access to a small group of users to test the feature and improve it based on real feedback. The company added that more users will be invited in the coming weeks before a wider launch. People can join a waitlist for Copilot Tasks from Microsoft's website.

Set Tasks In Plain English

According to Microsoft, users can just describe what they need in “natural language” and assign Copilot Tasks to carry out jobs on a one-off, scheduled or recurring basis.

“Copilot plans and goes to work. You adjust or refine as needed. Tasks works in the background, with its own computer and browser, across various apps and services, and reports back when it's done,” said Microsoft.

“It's not autopilot,” Microsoft said. “It's a copilot, working with you, and always giving you control of the final decision.”

Microsoft said Copilot Tasks is built to seek user consent before carrying out meaningful actions, such as making a payment or sending a message on a user's behalf. The company added that users can review, pause or cancel a task at any time.

From Inbox Management To Party Planning

Microsoft said early testing of Copilot Tasks in daily routines has highlighted several practical use cases. The system can handle recurring jobs, such as surfacing urgent emails each evening with draft replies ready, unsubscribing from unwanted promotional messages, tracking new rental listings every Friday and booking viewings. It can also prepare Monday briefings on meetings and travel plans, while analysing how a user spends their time.

It can create study plans, turn emails into slide decks, and tailor CVs for job applications. The system can also plan events, compare service providers, book appointments, monitor travel changes, rebook hotels if prices drop, and cancel unused subscriptions.
