Microsoft Corp.'s Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella on Wednesday announced the Skype Lite application, with in-built Aadhaar-based identity verification. The application has been built keeping India in mind, said Nadella in his keynote address at the ‘Future Encoded' event in Mumbai.

Skype Lite is built to work in low bandwidth and poor connectivity, given that most of India still operates on the 2G (second generation) spectrum. Additionally, the app takes only 13 megabytes (MB) worth space, giving it the name.

LinkedIn Lite

The other application, Nadella announced, is the amalgamation of the largest professional platform and the largest professional cloud--LinkedIn Lite.

Also built for Indian audiences, the platform can be described as “simple yet powerful”, Nadella said during his keynote. LinkedIn Lite, too, is built for areas with poor connectivity and lower bandwidth. Apart from this, the application includes data for hiring and business-to-business sales.

Sangam

Microsoft identified a problem with the Indian education and hiring system, which gives importance to students only from certain recognised colleges.

India's challenge is to take any college graduate and realise their potential on what they are capable of instead of which college they studied from.

To address this speed breaker, Nadella announced the Sangam project, which entails an educational application equipped with Linkedin Lite.

This project will close the “loop” of empowerment, Nadella added, stressing that the application was meant to be extended to medium to low-skilled workers.
