Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open after failing to fully recover from his persistent right knee injury, dealing a major blow to the final Grand Slam of the year.
The world No.1 confirmed his decision on Friday after returning to the court for training in Monte Carlo and realising that he still needs more time to regain full fitness.

In a statement, Sinner said: "Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year."
"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue."

Sinner has been working closely with his team and medical staff in an effort to recover, but the 25-year-old ultimately decided that he would not be ready to compete in New York.
His withdrawal comes after he had already pulled out of the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open as he continued his recovery.
The decision is a particularly disappointing one for Sinner, who has not returned to competitive action since his Wimbledon triumph and was looking forward to playing at the US Open.

"I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."
It also means that at least one of Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz will miss the third Grand Slam of the year. Alcaraz, meanwhile, was forced to sit out the French Open and Wimbledon due to a right wrist injury before confirming his return for the US Open.
