India’s 18-year-old grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju made history on Thursday by defeating China’s Ding Liren to win the 2024 World Chess Championship. This victory makes him the youngest ever world champion. Gukesh is also the first teenager to claim this title.
He joins the ranks of Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand as the second Indian to win the prestigious crown, the first since Anand's victory in 2012. The 14th and final match appeared headed for a draw until a late blunder by Ding Liren, who sacrificed his rook, sealed Gukesh’s triumph.

Gukesh is the second Indian to secure the World Chess Championship title, achieving the milestone over a decade after Viswanathan Anand, a five-time champion, lost the crown to Norway’s Magnus Carlsen in Chennai in 2013. Carlsen relinquished the title in 2023, allowing Ding Liren to defeat Ian Nepomniachtchi and claim the championship.
After 13 games spread over three weeks, Ding anticipated rapid and blitz tiebreakers. He had successfully countered Gukesh’s aggressive strategies and steered the match towards a seemingly drawish position.
