IPL 2026: Will Fans Get Full Or Partial Refund If Match Is Washed Out? Here's What The Rules Say

With KKR vs LSG also under rain threat after Eden Gardens' last game ended in a no-result, here's a look at the washout rules in the IPL and whether or not fans will get ticket refunds.

Kolkata Knight Riders return to Eden Gardens under a familiar cloud, quite literally. Their previous home fixture was abandoned after just 3.4 overs due to persistent rain, and forecasts again threaten to disrupt the KKR vs Lucknow Super Giants clash in match 15 of the Indian Premier League 2026 season.

While the immediate concern remains whether a result is possible, with KKR still chasing their first win of the season, repeated interruptions due to the pre-monsoon kalboishakhi or nor'westers have also brought a parallel question into sharper focus for fans, what happens to tickets if a match is washed out?

Minimum Overs Rule: What Constitutes A Result

Under IPL 2026 playing conditions, a match must see at least five overs bowled to the team batting second for a result to be declared. If that threshold is not met, the match is officially recorded as a No Result. In such cases, both teams are awarded one point each, and net run rate remains unaffected.

For matches interrupted after play has begun, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is used to recalculate targets based on overs lost.

How Rain Impacts State Of Play

The IPL allows for a structured buffer to maximise chances of a result. Each league match includes up to 60 minutes of additional time to accommodate delays. If interruptions extend beyond this window, overs begin to be reduced, typically at a rate of one over lost for roughly every four minutes of delay.

For a standard 7:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time start, the window to begin a full 20-over contest generally closes around 8:30 p.m. The absolute cut-off to start even a five-over-per-side match stretches to around 10:55 p.m to 11 p.m IST.

This sliding scale determines whether teams get a shortened contest, a DLS-adjusted chase, or no game at all.

Refund Rules: When Do Fans Get Their Money Back?

Refunds, however, follow a far stricter framework and often tend to disappoint ticket-holders. A full refund is generally issued only if no ball is bowled in the match. If even a single delivery is completed, tickets are typically deemed “used,” regardless of whether a result is achieved.

This means that matches like KKR's previous home fixture, where play lasted just 3.4 overs, would not qualify for refunds despite ending in a no-result.

Refund policies may also vary slightly depending on the venue and the respective state association or ticketing partner, though the broad IPL guideline of “no refund after the first ball” remains the standard across grounds.
