Voting in the eighth and final round of polling has concluded in West Bengal, bringing to a close a five-week electoral excercise across four states and one union territory, that also saw Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry head to the ballot box. Elections to the five legislative assemblies were carried out even as various parts of India suffered from the second wave of Covid-19 infections.
The CNX Exit Poll is projecting a victory for the LDF as well, but by a closer margin. This survey, telecast on Republic TV, sees the CPI(M)-led left front winning between 72 and 80 seats, with the UDF lagging at 58-64 seats.
The CVoter Exit Poll shown by Times Now and ABP News expects the BJP to drop seats but retain power in Assam, winning 65 seats, just above the half-way mark in the 126-member assembly. The Congress is projected as improving its performance from 2016, seen winning 59 seats.
The CVoter Exit Poll used by Times Now and ABP News meanwhile projects Mamata Banerjee forming a government in West Bengal for the third time, and estimates her party winning 158 seats, with the BJP seen at 115 seats.
Results to the 2021 elections in Tamil Nadu will offer the first glimplse of voter sentiment at the in the assembly level follwing the deaths of AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa in 2016, and DMK supremo M Karunadhi in 2018. The AIADMK under Chief Minister EK Palaniswamy has since formally joined the National Democratic Alliance led nationally by the BJP, while MK Stalin took over the leadership of the DMK following his father's death.
The Bharatiya Janata Party posted its best ever performance in West Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections 23 months back, winning 18 of the state's 42 seats and garnering 40% of votes. Ever since, the party has stepped up its game in the state, aiming to unseat the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee, who won power from the Left Front first in 2011.
