Uganda Charges Ex-Security Chief Eyeing Presidency with Treason

(Bloomberg) --

Uganda charged a former security minister seeking to unseat President Yoweri Museveni with treason and unlawful possession of firearms almost a week after his arrest.

Retired Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde will be in custody until March 30 when his case will be up for court mention, judiciary spokesman Solomon Muyita said by email.

Earlier this month, Tumukunde made comments on television aimed at instigating neighboring Rwanda to cause a regime change in Uganda, and he was also in possession of a rifle and pistol without valid licenses, according to the charges.

Tumukunde, who was fired as security minister in March 2018, announced this month that he aspires to run for president. Several others have said they'll vie to remove Museveni, who has ruled Africa's second-biggest coffee grower for more than three decades.
