Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed Committee of Secretaries (CoS) in its first meeting yesterday is understood to have directed Coal India (CIL) to supply fuel at an 80 per cent "trigger" level or else it would be penalised.
Trigger level is the minimum level of supply of the fuel failing which the coal company is penalised.
The committee is headed by Principal Secretary Pulok Chatterjee and comprises secretaries from various ministries like Power, Steel, Coal, Commerce and Industry etc.
The Committee was constituted after several power sector honchos, including Ratan Tata and Anil Ambani, met the Prime Minister on January 18 and asked for his help in addressing the problems of acute shortages of coal and natural gas grappling the sector.
On being asked about the outcome of his meeting with the Finance Minister, Shinde said, "Spoke to the FM on issues with imported coal in the sector."
Shinde said, "I have consulted a number of things...with the Finance Minister...like difficulties of power developers, the imported coal issue etc. But I am very happy that the Finance Minister is aware of all such things and he will consider all my proposals."
