Maharashtra may head for President's rule if a new state government is not in place by Nov. 7, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sudhir Mungantiwar said on Friday.

His comments came as there appeared to be no headway in government formation even a week after Maharashtra election results on Oct. 24.

Talking to a Marathi TV channel, Mungantiwar attributed the delay in talks between the BJP and the Shiv Sena to Diwali and said discussions will start in a day or two.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut told reporters that the new Maharashtra chief minister will be from his party. If the Sena decides, it can get the required numbers to form a stable government in Maharashtra, he said.

Raut said that there have been no talks yet between the BJP and the Shiv Sena on Maharashtra government formation.
