Days after he was arrested and sent to jail, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's health deteriorated on Sunday, 22 July, with the country's media saying that he is on the verge of having a kidney failure. A medical board has reportedly recommended his immediate transfer from Adiala jail to a hospital.

Nawaz Sharif on the Verge of Kidney Failure, May Be Shifted to Hospital: Reports

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's health deteriorated on Sunday, 22 July, with the country's media saying he is on the verge of having a kidney failure. A medical board has recommended his immediate transfer from Adiala jail to a hospital, ANI reported on Sunday, 22 July, citing Pakistani media.

According to the country's media, the doctors who examined Sharif in jail said that he is suffering from dehydration, with the blood urea rising to dangerous levels, along with an increase in the heart rate. The doctors reportedly called for shifting him to a hospital immediately.

Regarding the development, Pakistani news channel Express News was quoted as saying:

The hospital in jail doesn't have the facility where Nawaz Sharif could be given IV fluid. It is necessary to take him to hospital. If it is not done, a situation of emergency could arise at night.

Islamabad High Court Denies Bail to Nawaz Sharif, Daughter Maryam

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday, 17 July, cancelled the bail requests of Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif and son-in-law Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar in connection to the Avenfield properties case.

A two-judge division bench comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kyani issued a notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to submit a response on appeals filed by the Sharif family.

The bench rejected the appeal to grant bail to Sharif, Maryam and Safdar, and directed the NAB to submit its reply to the application seeking to suspend their conviction, ARY News reported.

Despite being lodged in Rawalpindi's Adiala jail, Nawaz Sharif made an emotional appeal to the citizens of his country to exercise their right and vote in the general elections, to be held on 25 July.

NDTV states that Sharif had reportedly said this in an audio message, which he had recorded in London, ahead of his arrests. The message went viral on social media on Monday, 16 July.

Make 25 July a memorable day. Spread my message across the homes, streets and villages [of the country]. Those who dishonour the power of vote, defeat those conspiring such plans so that they will hang their heads in shame.

Maryam too, on Saturday, had recorded an emotional message to her supporters saying: “Had I not been in a jail, I would have been fighting with you all and now that I am imprisoned, I still am with you every moment. Your daughter appeals to you to keep the preparation of the elections underway.”

7 Separate Appeals Filed by Nawaz Sharif, Daughter, and Son-in-Law

Seven separate appeals were filed on behalf of Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam Sharif, and son-in-law Safdar Awan pertaining to the corruption references against them, Dawn reported.

Advocate Khawaja Haris filed three appeals on behalf of the ex-PM. The first appeal urged the court to overturn the verdict in the Avenfield case. The second sought to suspend the verdict until the High Court passes a decision regarding the NAB court's verdict, and a third requesting the transfer of the other two cases against Nawaz to another judge, Dawn added.

Sharif and Daughter File Appeal in Islamabad High Court

Nawaz Sharif, daughter Maryam Nawaz, and Captain (retd) Safdar Awan on 16 July, filed an appeal in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the verdict in the Avenfield case, Geo News reported. The appeal reportedly cites legal flaws in the judgement, and asks for the three convicts to be released on bail.

Zardari Condemns Terror Investigation Against PML-N

Asif Ali Zardari, leader and former president of Pakistan Peoples Party condemned the initiation of terrorism cases against PML-N, Dawn reported. In a statement issued by his party's Central Media Office on Sunday, 15 July, he asserted that every citizen has the democratic right to hold rallies and public meetings.

Pakistani authorities have opened a criminal investigation into Nawaz Sharif's political party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), under an anti-terrorism law on Sunday, 15 July, Reuters reported. The case pertains to a march staged by them on 13 July, the day Sharif and his daughter returned to Pakistan, that defied the ban on holding rallies on a Friday.

Family Meets Nawaz Sharif, Maryam in Adiala Jail

Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz's family met them at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi on 14 July night after the two began serving their prison terms.

The family members included the former leader's brother Shehbaz Sharif, his son Hamza Shehbaz, and Maryam Nawaz's daughter Meharun Nisa.

They were flown to Islamabad from Lahore on a special plane for the meeting, which took place in the jail superintendent's room and continued for more than two hours, IANS cited Dawn news as saying.

Punjab Home Department Notifies 'Better Class' Category in Jail for Nawaz Sharif

After Nawaz Sharif's legal team claimed that no bed and no AC was provided to him in Adiala Jail, and that the washroom at his disposal was in despicable condition, the Punjab home department notified "Better Class" category in the jail for the former prime minister and his son-in-law Mohammad Safdar on their formal requests.

Meanwhile, Maryam refused to apply for the better class, reported IANS.

Abbasi, Shehbaz Among 1,500 Booked for Taking Out Rally in Support of Sharif

Around 1,500 PML-N workers and leaders, including Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Shehbaz Sharif, were booked on Saturday, 14 July, under terrorism and other charges for taking out a rally in Lahore in support of ousted Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif, reported PTI.

The police said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders and workers had been booked for taking out the rally on Friday in violation of law, attacking policemen and rangers, causing damage to the public property and hurling abuses at the judiciary and military.

Thousands of PML-N workers had set up their march to reach the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore to welcome Nawaz Sharif and and his daughter Maryam Nawaz arriving from London.
