The government has stopped Aadhaar verification process for issuing driving licences, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Parliament on Monday.

“The Ministry, in compliance to the order of the Supreme Court, dated Sept. 26, 2018...stopped the process of verification using Aadhaar for Driving Licences,” the Road Transport and Highways Minister told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

He said according to the information provided by National Informatics Centre, 1.57 crore Aadhaar numbers have been obtained for driving licences.

Aadhaar numbers obtained for vehicle registrations are 1.65 crore, the minister added.

“The process of collection of biometric data at RTOs has been discontinued,” he said.
