(Bloomberg) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's cabinet will rescind an amendment that sought to strip mayors of their autonomy in the fight against the coronavirus, MTI state news service reported, citing a senior minister.
The bill submitted Tuesday had raised concern about further power consolidation in Hungary a day after Orban won parliament's consent to rule by decree indefinitely, citing the virus. The government won't follow through on clipping the power of mayors, MTI said Wednesday, citing Gergely Gulyas, the minister in charge of Orban's office.
The bill had proposed subjecting the decisions of mayors during the current open-ended state of emergency to pre-approval by government-appointed task forces. If the proposal is revoked, mayors will retain the ability to assume the responsibilities of local councils to make decisions during emergencies.
