Rahul Gandhi said he “humbly accepts people’s verdict” after the Indian National Congress lost in all the five states that went to polls.

“We will learn from this and keep working for the interests of the people of India,” Gandhi tweeted. He extended gratitude to party workers and volunteers for their “hard work and dedication”.

The Bharatiya Janata Party retained Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Uttarakhand, and emerged as the largest party in Goa. The Aam Aadmi Party swept Punjab in a surprise mandate.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, general secretary of the Congress and in-charge of its Uttar Pradesh election campaign, also tweeted that she accepted the "people's verdict".

The party’s leaders and workers fought on people's issues but failed to convert the hard work into votes in India's most populous state, she said.

The Congress is following a positive agenda for the betterment of Uttar Pradesh, and will continue the duty of being a party in opposition, she tweeted.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, general secretary of the Congress and the party's chief spokesperson, said the party expected far better results in Goa, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

"In Punjab, the Congress presented a new leadership in Sardar Charanjeet Singh Channi who is honest and dedicated to the cause of the people, but we couldn’t overcome the incumbency of 4.5 years under Amarinder Singh," he said in a press conference. "People voted for change in Punjab, and we congratulate Aam Aadmi Party, Bhagwant Mann, and Arvind Kejriwal."

Highlights from the press conference:

  • In U.P., they were able to resurrect and revive the Congress party but that didn't get converted into seats in this election.

  • The party put up a determined fight in Uttarakhand and Goa.

  • The Congress will continue to raise issues of unemployment, inflation, of sinking economy, infrastructure issues in education, health, power, and other sectors, and shall continue to work with the people.

  • The Congress is determined to resurrect itself from the grassroots through "detailed introspection".
