Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Supreme Court's judgment on the disputed site at Ayodhya is notable as it “highlights that any dispute can be amicably solved in the spirit of due process of law”. He also exhorted Indians for the “calm and peace” maintained in the run-up to today's verdict.

Other leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government and key opposition party Congress said the apex court's verdict in the decades-old Ayodhya land dispute case will help “strengthen the social fabric” of the country.

In a unanimous decision, a five-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Hindu parties in the Ayodhya land dispute. The disputed land will be handed over to a trust which will also have representation from the Nirmohi Akhara, the apex court said.

The central government has been granted 3-4 months to formulate a scheme for setting up of the trust and hand over of disputed site for construction of temple. A suitable alternative plot of land measuring 5 acres at Ayodhya will be given to Sunni Waqf Board for the construction of a mosque, the court further ordered.

Here's how political leaders reacted:

Not A Win, Loss For Anybody: Prime Minister Modi

“Be it Ram Bhakti or Rahim Bhakti, it is imperative that we strengthen the spirit of Rashtra Bhakti,” the Prime Minister said in a series of tweets after the Supreme Court decision.

Modi said the apex court's judgment is notable because:

  • It highlights that any dispute can be amicably solved in the spirit of due process of law.
  • It reaffirms the independence, transparency and farsightedness of our judiciary.
  • It clearly illustrates everybody is equal before the law.
