Injured Woman Dies, Railways Announces Rs 500,000 Ex Gratia Payment
A woman who received injuries in the Andheri bridge collapse on July 3, succumbed to her wounds on Saturday, 7 July, in Cooper Hospital, Mumbai. The railways has announced an ex gratia amount of Rs 500,000 to the family of the woman who succumbed to her wounds today evening. A Western Railways spokesperson said that all the medical expenses will be borne by the railways, and all the assistance will be given to obtain the compensation.
The BMC said it was the Railways' responsibility to regularly check and maintain the 47-year-old road overbridge in suburban Andheri a portion of which collapsed on Tuesday.
A part of the Gokhale bridge in Mumbai's Andheri collapsed on Tuesday, 3 July, disrupting the local train services in the city. The bridge connects Andheri East to Andheri West.

Audit of Bridge was Conducted in November 2017
Railways Minister Piyush Goyal an audit of this particular bridge was conducted in November 2017. A spokesperson of Western Railway told PTI that "no structural flaw was found in the audit".
Onus is On Railways: BMC
The BMC said it was the Railways' responsibility to regularly check and maintain the 47-year-old road overbridge in suburban Andheri a portion of which collapsed on Tuesday.
The Gokhale road overbridge (ROB), built in 1971, collapsed near the eastern side of the Andheri railway station and part of it fell on rail tracks this morning.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the area where the mishap took place falls under the Railways' jurisdiction.
"The area where a portion of the bridge collapsed comes under the Railways. Therefore, it was Railways' duty to conduct a safety audit and carry out maintenance of the bridge," a senior BMC engineer said.
Railways to Undertake Safety Audit of 450 Bridges
The Railways on Tuesday announced to undertake a safety audit of nearly 450 road overbridges, foot overbridges and bridges over the pipelines here to detect and rectify any flaws in them.
Railways Minister Piyush Goyal made the announcement in suburban Andheri where a portion of a road overbridge (ROB) collapsed this morning due to heavy rains.
A joint safety audit will be conducted by the Railways, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and IIT-Bombay of the 445 ROBs, foot overbridges (FOBs) and bridges over the pipelines in Mumbai as part of efforts to improve safety of commuters, Goyal said.
Railway Minister Rewards Motorman for Averting Mishap
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday, 3 July praised motorman Chandrashekhar Sawant who saw a snapped overhead electric line and stopped a local train avoiding a bigger mishap.
“I would like to thank motorman Chandrashekhar Sawant who stopped the train as soon he saw an over head electric line snap and averted a bigger mishap. He will be awarded Rs 5 lakh,” said Goyal.
Have Asked For a Report in 15 Days: Piyush Goyal
Union Railway Minister while addressing the media called the bridge collapse an unfortunate incident and said that Commissioner of Rail Safety will give report on the mishap in 15 days.
“Its an unfortunate incident, I have ordered an inquiry into this. Commissioner of Rail Safety will give report in 15 days,” said Goyal.
Goyal also announced an ad hoc compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the victims stating that their treatment expenses will be taken care of by Railways.
He said around 700 employees of the railways, helped by some experts from Delhi and Lucknow, were working on the restoration work and the train services will be resumed completely by tonight.
The minister said the last safety audit of the ROB had been conducted on November 12 last year and nothing wrong had been found in that.
Goyal said that during the next six months, a joint safety audit will be conducted by the railways, the BMC and IIT at the 445 road overbridges, foot overbridges and bridges over the pipelines in Mumbai as part of efforts to improve safety for the commuters.

One person injured in the Andheri bridge collapse is critical, while four others have sustained grievous injuries of the five victims.

The Commissioner of Rail Safety of Western Circle will hold an inquiry of this incident.While some trains are cancelled or terminated due to traffic disruption, 27 special buses have been arranged between Borivali and Bandra stations for clearance of stranded passengers.
Directed Officials to Speed Up Repair Work: Piyush Goyal
Union Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal tweeted that he has directed the officials to speed up the repair work and rapidly restore traffic in close coordination with other departments. A few minutes later, he tweeted that he is overseeing the developments in Mumbai closely.

The train services on Western Line is likely to resume only after 3 PM on Tuesday, 3 July, due to heavy rainfall and rescue operations following the Andheri bridge collapse.

The Central Lines is running with a delay of 20-30 minutes, due to waterlogging has been reported on tracks between Kurla and Sion, and Sandhurst Road and Masjid Bunder.

Two people have been injured in the bridge collapse accident, said sources to The Quint.
“We are at the spot and trying to check with the locals if someone is missing as they might be trapped under the debris,” said the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
