Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has tested positive for the coronavirus and is responding well to treatment in a German hospital, his office said.
Tebboune's health “is gradually improving,” state new service APS said, citing a statement from the presidency.
The 74-year-old flew to Germany last week after aides reportedly contracted the virus. He was absent as Algerians snubbed his proposals to reset the country's constitution in a weekend referendum. While the amendments were passed, less than a quarter of voters bothered to take part.
Tebboune insists the changes address grievances which forced out longtime leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika and kept demonstrations simmering through curbs to contain the coronavirus. Critics contend the amendments give the president more power and expand the authority of the influential military.
