(Bloomberg) -- Riley Williams, the woman charged with stealing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's laptop during the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, got permission from a judge to leave her home confinement for Christmas.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson in Washington on Wednesday granted Williams's request to spend the holiday with her grandmother at an unspecified location. Prosecutors didn't object to the request, which is similar to those made by others charged in the riot.
Williams was previously allowed to leave her home only for work, church services or medical appointments. She's charged with civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding and theft of government property, as well as assaulting, resisting or impeding officers.
Williams allegedly told a witness she planned to sell the laptop to a friend in Russia, “who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence service,” according to the criminal complaint. The laptop has never been recovered. Video footage from the riot shows Williams inside the Capitol, moving toward Pelosi's office and encouraging others to follow, the U.S. said.
