Turkey’s Coronavirus Cases Up 6.7%, Death Toll Rises to 1,403

(Bloomberg) -- Turkey reported 107 new coronavirus fatalities on Tuesday, bringing the death toll from the outbreak to 1,403, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said.

The number of confirmed cases now stands at 65,111, 6.7% higher than Monday, which marks the lowest daily increase since the outbreak began in Turkey. Turkey screened 33,070 people over the past 24 hours with 4,062 testing positive for the virus, the minister said in televised comments.

Policy makers have gradually raised restrictions on people's mobility since the first case was confirmed on March 10. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that last weekend's curfew in 31 cities will be repeated from midnight April 17 to midnight April 19.

The government has also stepped up efforts to mitigate the economic fallout. After it announced announcing a 100 billion liras ($14.7 billion) support package for businesses, it's now planning to make it easier for the sovereign wealth fund to take over private companies in distress.
