(Bloomberg) -- The activist coalition that backs Sudan's civilian wing of government said the army should cede chairmanship of the country's joint military-civilian sovereign council by Nov. 17.
A civilian should assume leadership of the council by that date, leading member of the Forces of Freedom and Change alliance, Mohamed Nagi Alassam, said Saturday, citing calculations based on previous pacts between activists, the army and rebel groups.
The Justice Ministry will give final legal advice on the matter, he told reporters in the capital, Khartoum. The transitional sovereign council is currently Sudan's highest decision-making body.
Sudan, where dictator Omar al-Bashir was ousted in 2019, is being led by an interim administration of civilians and military figures that are increasingly at odds. Tens of thousands of people have protested in Khartoum in recent days, demanding an end to what they say is the army's attempts to derail the country's democratic transition.
