New York Gym Chain Will Credit Members Locked Out by Virus

(Bloomberg) -- One of New York's biggest gym chains struck a deal with the state's attorney general to credit thousands of members for the weeks they've been barred from the facilities because of the coronavirus pandemic.

New York Sports Clubs, owned by Town Sports International Holdings also agreed to automatically freeze memberships and allow members to electronically cancel without penalties or conditions, New York Attorney General Letitia James said Friday in statement. Members were being charged despite a state order that shut down all health clubs on March 16, according to the statement.

“This is putting money back in the pockets of New Yorkers who were being illegally charged for unusable gym memberships,” James said in the statement. “We urge all New Yorkers to continue filing complaints with our office against companies seeking to take advantage of or unlawfully profit off the coronavirus public health crisis.”
