Mauritius Cuts 2018 Sugar-Output Forecast Second Time in a Month

(Bloomberg) -- Mauritius reduced its forecast for sugar output this year for the second time in a month as weather patterns aren't favorable to sucrose formation.

The Indian Ocean island nation will probably produce 320,000 tons of the sweetener this year, the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture said in an e-mailed statement. Its initial forecast for the year was for 350,000 tons, which it reduced to 324,000 tons on Nov. 6.

Climatic conditions are “more conducive to cane growth than the accumulation of saccharose,” it said.

Sugar-cane cultivation is the biggest agricultural activity in Mauritius.
