Lesotho Clears Next Hurdle to Oust Leader on Murder Charge

(Bloomberg) -- The Lesotho Senate has passed a bill moving the landlocked African country closer to ousting Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, who has been implicated in his ex-wife's murder.

“The 9th Amendment bill to the constitution has been passed by the Senate. It is now on its way to the office of the Attorney General,” South African mediator Jeff Radebe said in a media briefing on Saturday in Maseru. The next step will be to send it to the King Letsie III for his assent.

Thabane, 80, indicated in February that he planned to step down by the end of July, after he and with his current wife were implicated in the murder of his then-spouse. Thabane was inaugurated as premier two days after his second wife was shot in June 2017.
