Kathryn Garcia, who failed to secure the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor in June, was appointed on Wednesday as director of state operations by New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Garcia had served as the city's sanitation head but had been relatively unknown politically before the Democratic primaries. After a surge in popularity toward the end of her campaign, she suffered a narrow loss to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

That base of support in New York City could help Hochul, who was sworn in as governor last week after Andrew Cuomo resigned amid a sexual harassment scandal. Hochul has said she plans to run in the 2022 governor's race.

Garcia and Neysa Alsina, who was appointed to be a special adviser on pandemic relief, “know how to run effective and professional operations, and they will be instrumental in making our state government work better for New Yorkers and restoring trust in government,” Hochul said in a statement on Wednesday.
