GM's Targeted Factories Span Decades and Political Borders

(Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co.'s decision to close five North American factories by the end of 2019 puts more than 6,700 salaried and hourly jobs at risk, unless GM and its unions find some new products for them to build. GM also is discontinuing several models built at the plants. The reductions are part of a broader plan that may cut more than 14,000 jobs in all and includes shuttering two more factories outside North America.

Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant (Michigan)

Products: Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Impala
Hourly Workers: 1,348
Salaried Workers: 194
End of Production: March 1 for LaCrosse and Volt; June 1 for CT6 and Impala

Lordstown Assembly and Stamping Plant (Ohio)

Oshawa Assembly Plant (Ontario, Canada)

Products: Chevrolet Impala, Cadillac XTS; previous generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks
Hourly Workers: 2,600
Salaried Workers: 300
End of Production: Fourth quarter 2019
Opened: 1953; GM acquired original plant in 1918 in merger with Chevrolet
Size of Facility: 5.1 million square feet for manufacturing operations

Warren Transmission Plant (Michigan)

Products: Six-speed transmissions for Cadillac XTS, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Impala, Malibu and Volt. Also the front-wheel electric-drive unit for Volt

Baltimore Operations (White Marsh, Maryland)
