Congos Sign Deal to Build $550 Million Bridge Linking Countries

(Bloomberg) -- Officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Republic of Congo signed an agreement to build a bridge across the river that separates their capital cities.

The project, estimated to cost $550 million, will include a toll bridge, railway track, road and sidewalk, according to a statement read to reporters at an Africa Development Bank investment forum in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The 1,575-meter (0.98-mile) route will enable the two nations to develop special economic zones on either side of the bridge, Republic of Congo Spatial Planning Minister Jean-Jacques Bouya said at the forum.

The two nations' capitals of Kinshasa and Brazzaville are separated by the Congo River and travel between the two cities is currently only possible by boat or plane.
