Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast: Heavy Rains Likely Across State; Chennai On Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Chennai and several other districts in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, Dec. 18, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these regions.

According to a bulletin by the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, four districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram are set to experience “heavy to very heavy” rainfall today.

"Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts," the IMD said.

The met department also issued a yellow alert for three other districts including Puducherry.

"Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Villupuram, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry," the weather office said in its bulletin.

Chennai will be on a yellow alert on Dec. 19 as well.

In a separate bulletin on Wednesday, the IMD stated that the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to become more "marked" and move towards the coastal Tamil Nadu in the next two days.

"The low-pressure area lies over southwest Bay of Bengal at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 18th December. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to middle tropospheric levels. It is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu coast during next 2 days," it said.

The weather office further issued a very heavy rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema on Wednesday.

"Isolated heavy rainfall very likely on 18th and 19th December with isolated very heavy rainfall on 18th December," it said.

Satellite images shared by the IMD on its X account on Dec. 17 showed "convective clouds associated with the low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal."
