RBI Releases List Of Bank Holidays In January 2025: Check When Banks Will Be Closed In First Month Of New Year

As we enter the new year 2025, it is important to be aware of when banks will be closed to avoid any last-minute rush. A bank holiday calendar helps you plan your important banking activities in advance.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on December 31 released its official bank holiday list. As per the calendar, there are eight bank holidays in January apart from second Saturdays and Sundays.

According to the RBI holiday calendar, bank holidays are classified into three categories: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) Holidays, and Banks' Closing of Accounts. Additionally, holiday observances for festivals and other events may differ based on the state and the regional offices of the central bank.

Here is the bank holiday list for January 2025, as per RBI calendar.

• New Year's Day/Loosong/Namsoong: January 1 (Wednesday) — Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Sikkim, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya. 

• Loosong/Namsoong/New Year Celebration: January 2 (Thursday) — Mizoram and Sikkim.

• Sri Guru Gobind Singh's Birthday: January 6 (Monday) — Punjab and Haryana.

• Missionary Day/Imoinu Iratpa: January 11 (Second Saturday) — Manipur and Mizoram.

• Makar Sankranti/Uttarayana Punyakala/Pongal/Maghe Sankranti/Magh Bihu/Birthday of Hazarat Ali: January 14 (Tuesday) — Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

• Thiruvalluvar Day: January 15 (Wednesday) — Tamil Nadu.

• Uzhavar Thirunal: January 16 (Thursday) — Tamil Nadu.

• Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose/Vir Surendrasai Jayanti: Jan. 23 (Thursday) — West Bengal, Tripura and Odisha.

Notably, the RBI has not included January 26 in its holiday calendar since it is a Sunday. Banks are usually closed on all Sundays.

To know the bank holidays in your specific area, it is best to contact your nearest branch and get knowledge about the same in order to schedule your activities. It is also worth noting that only bank activities that require a physical visit to the branch will be suspended on the holidays. Other activities like UPI, ATM and Internet banking transactions will continue as usual.
