The central government has appointed Senior Advocate R Venkataramani as the next Attorney General for India.

He will succeed KK Venugopal, whose extended term ends on Sept. 30.

Venkataramani will be the new Attorney General for a period of three years, according to a notification by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

Earlier, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi had declined the central government's offer to be the country's highest law officer for the second time. He told PTI that there was no specific reason for his decision.

Rohatgi was the Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017. He was succeeded by Venugopal, who was appointed to the post in July 2017. Venugopal's term was extended multiple times.
