Important Information- Every year, on this auspicious day, most Hindus observe Satyanarayan fast. But this year, due to Chandra Grahan, the fast will be observed on Chaturdashi Tithi.

As mentioned above, this festival plays a very significant role in the Hindu community. The Purnima in the month of Kartik is considered to be one of the most pious Purnimas of the year. It is believed that Kartik Purnima pooja helps an individual get rid of all the committed sins. Hindus around the world observe fast and take a bath in the Holy water, Ganga. It is one of the most performed practices on this day. And if any devotee fails to do so, they can also take some Ganga water or jal and mix it with normal water to take a bath and fulfil the ritual.

Also, people worship Lord Vishnu, and it is often recommended to worship Goddess Lakhmi as well. Moreover, on this day, worshipping the moon also plays an important role. It is believed that offering Arghya to the moon gives freedom from all defects or Dosh.

Furthermore, followers of Jainism also celebrate this day as the ‘Jain Festival of Light’. It also marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and is celebrated as Guru Nanak Jayanti or Gurpurab. Everyone visits Gurudwaras to offer prayers to Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

The History Behind Kartik Purnima

As per Hindu scriptures, it is said that on this day, Lord Shiva killed the demon, Tripurasura, and that is the reason why this festival is also referred to as Tripuri Purnima. Moreover, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Matsya on the eve of the Kartik Purnima.

1. On this festival, devotees visit Ganga ghats to take a holy bath. Moreover, people worship Lord Shiva and visit temples to get his blessings.

2. People worship the six creations named Shiva, Santati, Kshama, Anusuiya, and Priti during the moonrise.

3. As Chandra Grahan will also occur this year, it is advised to do some charity.

4. Elderly Hindus also suggest people chant Mantras and read holy books and epics like Bhagwat Geeta and Ramayana.

5. Devotees also organise Hawan and feed the needy people.

6. People also lighten and brighten the Ganga ghats with Diyas.

7. Elderly people believe that everyone should help at least one needy person on Kartik Purnima in order to get the best blessings of the lord. People should also worship a cow and feed them food.
