Mumbai is unlikely to see any relief from rain this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continuous rainfall till July 27. The weather agency has issued an orange alert for Mumbai for Thursday, warning of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places.

The weather agency also issued a yellow alert for the city on Wednesday as continuous rains lashed the city, leading to waterlogged roads and traffic disruptions. In the past two days, Mumbai has recorded over 200 mm of rainfall.

This year, the monsoon arrived in Mumbai on May 26, the earliest since 1950, according to the IMD. The data shows that in June, both Colaba and Santacruz weather stations of Mumbai received higher rainfall compared to 2024. Santacruz received 512.7 mm rainfall against 346.9 mm rainfall in June 2024. Meanwhile, Colaba received 592 mm rainfall compared to 507 mm in 2024.

With rainfall gaining momentum in July, the monthly downpour is likely to surpass the figures recorded last year. The early arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai and surrounding areas has also helped with the replenishment of the city’s water-supplying lakes, which have now reached a combined storage capacity of 86.88%, much faster than expected.

The seven water supplying lakes in Mumbai are Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Vehar, Tulsi and Middle Vaitarna.
