Karnataka's cabinet meeting at Nandi Hills on Wednesday approved the renaming of Bengaluru Rural to 'Bengaluru North' and the town of Bagepalli in Chikkaballapura district which borders Andhra Pradesh to 'Bhagyanagar'.

The renaming to Bengaluru North may be due to purposes of administrative clarity regarding classification as the Karnataka government had renamed Ramnagara to Bengaluru South in May earlier this year.

The name Bhagyanagar was likely given to the town formerly known as Bagepalli due to a push from various linguistic interest groups.

The meeting also saw discussions on education, health and drinking water projects.

The cabinet also renamed Bengaluru University as Dr Manmohan Singh City University.

"After we came to power in 2023, we decided to hold cabinet meetings in each revenue division. We have already held meetings in Kalaburagi and Mysuru, and now in Nandi Hills. We are planning to hold the next one in Vijayapura," Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told NDTV.

He reported that the cabinet discussed 48 subjects with development projects worth Rs 3,400 crore being among them.

Siddaramaiah also announced drinking water projects for Bengaluru North, Kolar, Chikkaballapura and Hassan.

He claimed that the administration would solve drinking water issues for the state within two years.

The projects are meant to give water to 75 lakh people across nine districts.

"After discussions with the Finance Department, this subject will be taken up in the next Cabinet meeting," the chief minister said.

The cabinet also allotted Rs 2,050 crore for planned development works.

"We also discussed the Yettinahole project. This project will require Rs 23,250 crores in total, and so far, around Rs 17,251 crores have been spent," Siddaramaiah said.
