Since 2020, airlines in India have received a total of 833 hoax bomb threats, including 15 such incidents reported so far this year, according to official data shared in Parliament on Monday.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, citing figures from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, informed the Rajya Sabha that these threats have been directed at various airlines, with IndiGo facing the highest number this year. Of the 15 threats in 2025, seven were to IndiGo flights, four to Air India, two to Lufthansa, and one each to Malindo and American Airlines.

The data also showed a sharp surge in such cases last year, when 728 hoax threats were reported — significantly higher than 71 in 2023, 13 in 2022, two in 2021, and four in 2020.

In response to these threats, BCAS has put in place strict protocols to handle such situations, including close coordination with law enforcement agencies, central security agencies, CISF, and other aviation stakeholders. The minister said these measures have ensured that the threats have had minimal disruption to flight operations.

A Bomb Threat Contingency Plan is also in place as part of standard procedure to manage and respond to such incidents. Additionally, BCAS has issued advisories to all civil aviation stakeholders, urging them to maintain strong security measures to prevent any unlawful interference with aviation operations.
