According to the IMD classification, heavy rainfall refers to a 24-hour precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm. Rainfall is considered moderate when it exceeds 15 mm in a 24-hour period.

The ongoing rainfall in Mumbai and neighbouring districts is due to the arrival of the southwest monsoon in the region. Isolated lightning and gusty winds may cause weak trees or structures to fall, the weather agency warned. Further, brief power disruptions and crop damage are also possible.
