Heavy Showers Cripple Mumbai
Mumbai came to a halt on May 20 as heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning caused flooding and a series of rain-related incidents across the city. Between 8 am on May 20 and 8 am on May 21, the city recorded an average rainfall of 24 mm. The pre-monsoon showers led to major traffic snarls, including the inundation of the Andheri subway, a key link between the eastern and western suburbs.
Even local train commuters reported delays in suburban services. Uprooted trees and waterlogged roads also disrupted traffic in the city at several places.
Southwest Monsoon Update
According to the IMD’s 2 pm bulletin on May 21, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into additional parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin area, south and central Bay of Bengal and parts of northeast Bay of Bengal. Conditions are expected to become favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala within the next three to four days, according to the IMD.
