Air India and Tata Sons on Saturday said they have kickstarted the disbursal of compensations promised to families of those affected by the AI171 crash in Ahmendabad.
Air India said it also providing extensive financial, logistical, and emotional assistance to those who lost loved ones and to the survivors, recognizing the profound impact of this event.
A centralized helpdesk, operational since June 15, has been instrumental in facilitating interim compensation claims. Families of each deceased individual and the survivor are receiving an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh, approximately GBP 21,500 to address immediate financial needs. This single-window system streamlines documentation and expedites the compensation process, according to the statement.
Payments have commenced as of June 20, with three families already receiving funds and the remaining claims actively being processed. This is in addition to the Rs 1 crore (approximately GBP 85,000) support previously announced by Tata Sons.
Air India has also initiated the compensation process for those injured and the families of individuals who lost their lives on the ground.
Since the accident, over 500 volunteers from Air India and 17 other Tata group companies have mobilized to offer assistance. Each affected family has been assigned at least one trained caregiver from Air India’s Special Assistance team, providing round-the-clock support. These caregivers are assisting families throughout hospital processes, including DNA identification, and accompany them when mortal remains are released to facilitate transportation and funerals with dignity and respect.
Comprehensive financial assistance is also being provided, covering travel, accommodation, medical, and funeral expenses, with additional needs addressed.
Additionally, a team of trained psychologists and doctors has been deployed in Ahmedabad to provide trauma counseling and psychological support, while medical personnel address ongoing health needs.
Air India has also set up two toll-free helpline numbers, established on June 12, continue to provide vital information and support to both Indian and international callers. Air India and Tata Sons pledge to continue their support long-term, emphasizing that these families are now considered part of the Tata family, according to the release.
